Welcome!

Thank you for visiting Spitfire World.

I want to personally welcome you to my passion and my love. The Spitfire to me is the epitome of manned flight. Jets are nice, but the Spitfire was in the last generation of fighters where kills were up close and personal. No missles. No over the horizon targetting. Just a life and death fight for survival of the best and sometimes the lucky.

When you have seen one in person and you hear the growl of the Merlin or the Griffon, you will have an inkling of what I mean. To go further and to understand the story, the aces, the genre, and the setting of war fuelled development, will only lead to an even better appreciation of the feat that was the Spitfire.

SPITFIRE! The name evokes many emotions. We believe, as do many others that it was and remains the greatest and most beautiful airplane ever built. We hope you find our site useful and we have arranged it as follows:

The SPITFIRE HISTORY section contains information about the initial design of this wonderful aircraft, information on the Company that built it, the squadrons around the world that flew it, the major opponent aircraft, and those examples that are still flying or are being restored.

The SPITFIRE MARKS section contains information on the different verions (marks) of the aircraft. In this section you will find information on the type, the engine and horsepower, armament, and many other flight and performance specification data all arranged in order of Mark number. In addition, thanks to a gifted artist, we have added beautiful side views of each mark. Many of these images were created specifically for this site.

The SPITFIRE SHOPPE brings to you all that is Spitfire. Whether it be books, models, artwork, posters, kit planes, plans, drawings or even actual parts of real planes, we aim to provide you with the most comprehensive source for all of your Spitfire needs.

Finally, the SPITFIRE WORLD section tells you about our firm and our mission. It also contains terms of use for the site and disclaimers and such that our legal friends say we must include on our site. This section also tells more about the artist who helped make the site even better. Finally, there is a page that tells the story of a current Mark IX restoration in progress that you can be a part of through your generous donations.

Welcome to our site. We hope you enjoy the history, the pictures, and all that is Spitfire World.
